Torrevieja Carnival - a month-long celebration
The Torrevieja Carnival is one of the most important and anticipated festivities of this popular resort on the Costa Blanca. Every year, tens of thousands of people visit from all over the world to see this month-long festival for themselves.
The history of the carnival dates back to the 1980s, when a small group called "Friends of the Carnival" began organizing parades centered around several organized parties. But today's Carnival is a much bigger and more colourful affair, bringing dancing to the streets of this city. The Carnival parade takes its inspiration from traditional Brazilian festivals. But unlike Rio de Janeiro's Carnival, which lasts 'only' five days, Torrevieja's Carnival celebrations last a whole month.
The carnival is also associated with the crowning of the carnival queens.
